Iconic Looks From the Met Gala

Zendaya channels Joan of Arc in a custom Versace gown at the 2018 Met Gala.

The Met Gala is always one of the most thrilling days of the year in the fashion world. Each year, we see stars sporting incredible, avant-garde looks inspired by the gala’s theme. This year’s theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” The theme was designed to create a dialogue between fashion and the stunning artistic representations of Catholicism featured in many of the Met’s religious artworks. Below are some of our favorite looks from the Met Gala

Lana Del Rey in custom Gucci.

Stars took many different approaches to dressing in this years theme. Some took the theme more literally by recreating specific artistic representations of Catholicism, like Lana Del Rey who wore a custom Gucci dress that featured a heart centerpiece affixed with daggers, a reference to classic artistic depictions of Our Lady Of Sorrows.

Rihanna stunned in Maison Margiela and a borrowed mitre.

Rihanna, one of the evening’s cohosts (and always one to watch at the Met Gala), also took a more literal approach, wearing a richly embellished papal-inspired ensemble. She even borrowed a real cardinal’s hat, which was loaned to her by Cardinal Timothy Dolan.

Along with all the richly brocaded and boldly iconographic looks worn at the gala, we saw two kinds of jewelry: oversized, show-stopping pieces (like the evening’s many tiaras and headdresses) and simple, classic pieces that served to accent and compliment stars’ bold ensembles without overpowering them.

Rihanna chose both a bold headpiece and more subtle jewelry to compliment her look. Here you can see her accessorizing with several pairs of small, gorgeous diamond hoops.

Ariana Grande stunned in a custom Vera Wang dress that replicated some of the iconic art found in the Sistine Chapel.

Ariana chose to accessorize her heavenly ensemble with only one piece of jewelry, a stunning pair of large round white diamond studs.

Diamond studs proved particularly popular among stars this year, with many stars choosing to accessorize with their simple beauty, as to not distract from their bold ensembles.

Kylie Jenner chose to wear large diamond studs as well, making her first major public appearance since giving birth to her daughter Stormi in a sleek black velvet Alexander Wang gown accessorized with small sunglasses and cushion cut diamond studs.

Model Joan Smalls also stunned on the red carpet in a pair of diamond studs, which elegantly complimented her glittering Tommy Hilfiger gown.

These are just a few of our favorite looks from this years Met Gala, which proved to be one of  the best themes in recent years. From headdresses to embellished gowns to gorgeous symbolic ensembles, this year’s gala was truly a feast for the eyes.

The Stunning Jewelry Trend A-Listers Were Sporting at the 2017 Emmy Awards

On Sunday night, the biggest stars of television gathered at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles for the 2017 Emmy Awards. Besides tuning in to see which of the year’s many great series would take home awards, our eyes were glued to what jewelry pieces our favorite celebrities would be donning for the big night. The real winner of the Emmy Awards? Tennis bracelets. The chic and elegant bracelet with linked diamonds was the popular choice of jewelry for some of the best-dressed actresses, helping give them a truly timeless look with a lavish dash of sparkle. Here, our experts at DiamondStuds.com give you the inside scoop on the biggest jewelry trend of this year’s Emmys.

A-listers Jessica Biel and Zoe Kravitz headlined the night’s jewelry trend, showcasing gorgeous tennis bracelets that perfectly complement each of their outfits. Jessica Biel wore a jaw-dropping silver and beige Ralph & Russo Couture gown with an alluring thigh-high split that put her on our best-dressed list as soon as she walked the red carpet. She finished off her look with a bombshell pompadour hairdo and a tennis bracelet with captivating cushion diamonds that was absolutely breathtaking!

The red carpet was a fashion runway for style icon Zoe Kravitz, who wore a spectacular feathered gown by Dior that featured a one-of-a-kind rainbow ombre with a tasteful black top section. She put an exclamation on her glamorous outfit with the perfect combination of fine diamond jewelry that included a dazzling diamond encrusted tennis bracelet as well as a set of classic diamond studs. With Big Little Lies having won an Emmy for Outstanding Limited Series, in addition to her unquestionably having one of the most talked about looks of the night, it’s safe to say it was an amazing Emmy Awards for Kravitz.

Having graced the wrists of some of the best-dressed actresses of the night, tennis bracelets were definitely the hottest jewelry trend of the night. The classic bracelet has a refined and sophisticated aesthetic that can take any ensemble to the next level, just as it did for some of the stars at this year’s Emmys.

The 2017 Oscars were an exciting year for the award show— and not just because of the historic blunder made by presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway (they received the wrong card and announced that La La Land had won Best Picture rather than Moonlight, the actual winner). This year’s show was also an exceptionally good one for fashion.

The Oscars are always one of the most exciting days of the year for fashion lovers. The dazzling array of designer gowns and jewels that walk down the Oscars red carpet don’t just create a beautiful show— these looks also set the tone for fashion for the upcoming year. Elegance abounded at the Oscars this year, with many stars choosing looks with a refined glamour.

Neutral tones ruled the carpet this year, with neutral toned metallics leading the pack and black and white having major moments as well. Hidden Figures’ Janelle Monae had a standout look— she made almost every best-dressed list with her stunning Elie Saab black, white, and metallic dress. The night’s best actress winner Emma Stone also had a winning fashion moment. Her pale gold metallic Givenchy dress and elegant Tiffany & Co. drop earrings had critics saying she looked like the award she received.

Overall, bold, yet elegant jewelry was the major accessory trend this year. Bolder statement pieces like drop earrings, oversized chokers, and cuff-style earrings could be found on many stars.

Intricate stud earrings were also popular at the awards show, being worn by Karlie Kloss, Janelle Monae, and simpler studs being worn by Michelle Williams or Hailee Steinfeld. Studs are always a red carpet go to but they were particularly prominent this year because they pair so well with the oversized choker trend.

Colored Diamonds & Gemstones

Colored center stones are what many of today’s brides are looking for when searching for a  unique look for their engagement rings. This isn’t the first time brides have gravitated towards colored gems for their rings. Jacqueline Kennedy’s diamond and emerald ring created huge demand for emerald and diamond combo rings, and Princess Diana’s sapphire engagement ring gave the blue gem’s sales a major boost! In the past, specific gemstones like sapphires and emeralds have had their individual trend moments but, now, it seems that every shade of the rainbow is in demand with today’s brides who want something more unique than a classic white diamond.

When you’re looking for a colored center stone for an engagement ring, there are two major categories to choose from: colored diamonds and gemstones. There are many different kinds of precious gemstones in a huge array of colors. From peridot’s olive green tint, to topaz’s fiery shine, or ruby’s deep red to sapphire’s rich blue, you can find a gemstone any color of the rainbow. Colored diamonds can also come in a variety of shades, though somewhat fewer shades than among gemstones. Still, you can find a brilliant array of colored diamonds in steel gray, white, blue, yellow, orange, red, green, pink to purple, brown, and black.

So, what are the differences between gemstones and colored diamonds? It essentially boils down to three things: hardness, sentimental value, and specific look.

You simply can’t beat the hardness and durability of a diamond. Gems are measured on a scale of hardness from 1 to 10, with diamonds being the hardest at a 10. This scale is called the Mohs scale and it measures hardness based on what would scratch the stone. Generally, for jewelry that will be worn often, you would want gems that are a seven or above, as some particles in dust or dirt can be a seven and simply washing your hands could rub these particles on the stone and scratch it. Many precious gems are at a seven or above but some that are increasing in popularity are not. One prominent example would be the opal. Opals are currently experiencing a wave of popularity as engagement ring stones but they range from 5.5-6.5 on the Mohs scale and are therefore much more easily scratched than other precious stones. Whatever look you desire for your ring, it’s important to realize that some stones may damage more easily than others and require more care to keep in good condition. Always do your research before purchasing an expensive piece.

Sentimental value is always important for an engagement ring. For those who want a diamond because it is a symbol of “forever,” but also want a colorful look, colored diamonds could be for you. Gemstones carry a variety of meanings. If you have a specific wish for what your stone should stand for, you have many sentiments to choose from. For example, emeralds are said to be the stone of the goddess Venus and are meant to preserve love. You should research the history and lore of the stone you’re considering if meaning is important to you.

Finally, if you have a specific look in mind, that may help you decide whether you would get a colored diamond or a gem. Colored diamonds are found at the rate of about 1 in every 10,000 diamonds and are therefore extremely rare. Because of this, they are not widely available in all shapes, sizes, and colors. If you are looking for something particular, like a pink diamond of a specific shade, size, and shape it may be impossible to find simply because of how rare that particular diamond might be. Choosing a gemstone instead could help you achieve a specific look simply because of the wider variety of gemstones available.

Whether you’re thinking of getting a colored diamond or a gemstone on your engagement ring, there are an incredible amount of beautiful designs and colors to choose from. Here at Diamond Studs, let us help you to research what you’re thinking of adding to your collection so you find that piece that’s right for you.
