Easy DIY Queen of Hearts Costume

The Queen of Hearts is one of the most memorable characters from Alice in Wonderland, a story full of unique characters. Because Lewis Carrol’s book (originally called Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland) has been adapted so many times, there are many different versions of the famously irrational queen. There’s the color blocked animated version, the quirky Helena  Bonham Carter version, the playing-card-like version from the original book’s illustrations, and many more.

Because there are so many different versions of the Queen of Hearts, when putting together a Queen of Hearts costume, you really just have to make sure you incorporate a few key elements. Which are: red and black coloring, a crown, and lots of red hearts. This fabulous (and easy!) DIY version from Make It Yourself Girl does all that and more. Let’s take a look at how you can make your own easy DIY Queen of Hearts Costume.

DIY Queen of Hearts Costume Step 1: Playing Card Crown

diy queen of hearts

This playing card crown is as adorable as it is easy to make. To make this, you’ll need:

  • A deck of cards (including the Queen of Hearts card)
  • Hot glue gun and glue
  • A red head band
  • Heart stickers or heart-shaped gems
  • Red and silver pipe cleaners

First, make the base and the rounded top. For the base, just place some cards down randomly and glue together using your glue gun. For the top, you’ll need to fan some cards in a circle and glue them together. After you have these two pieces made, glue them together, let them dry, then glue the base to your red headband. To cover the glue lines, wrap some red and silver pipe cleaners around the top of the crown.

Finally, glue the Queen of Hearts card to the front of your crown and decorate with as many heart-shaped stickers as you like.

DIY Queen of Hearts Costume Step 2: Card Neck Ruff

diy queen of hearts

Nothing says “queen” quite like a neck ruff. And what better neck ruff for the Queen of Hearts than one made from playing cards? To make this playing card neck ruff, you’ll need:

  • A deck of cards
  • A large sheet of red or black craft foam
  • A large bowl
  • A pencil
  • Hot glue gun and glue
  • A stapler
  • A red ribbon
  • A hole puncher
  • Scissors

To make this playing card neck ruff, you’ll first need to make something to attach your playing cards to. Trace the shape of the top two thirds of your bowl onto your large piece of craft foam, then cut out the shape. Next, round off the top edges of the foam piece with your scissors.

Now, it’s time to attach your playing cards. You’ll be doing two rows of cards. Using your hot glue gun, first do the outside layer, slightly overlapping the cards as you go. Next, do the inner layer the same way. If after your glue dries, you notice that your cards won’t stay put due to their weight, you can use staples along the bottom edge for reinforcement.

Finally, use a hole punch to make holes at both the inner sides of the front. Then, lace a ribbon through the holes and use the ribbon as a tie when you wear your card neck ruff.

DIY Queen of Hearts Costume Step 3: Heart Tutu

diy queen of hearts

For this part of your costume, you can go one of two ways: you can make your own custom tutu with many colors or you can get a store bought tutu and add heart embellishments. To go with the easier version, you’ll need:

  • A tutu in red, white, or black
  • Red felt (or red, white, and black felt if you want more colors)
  • Scissors
  • A small piece of cardboard
  • Hot glue gun and glue

To embellish your tutu, first make your hearts. Cut your piece of cardboard into a heart shape, then use it to trace out hearts on your felt. Cut out the hearts, then simply hot glue them all across your tutu!

DIY Queen of Hearts Costume Step 4: Accessories and Makeup

diy queen of hearts

For your Queen of Hearts costume, go with a heart-shaped accessory fit for a queen, like this shimmering heart-shaped necklace.

Make sure to also incorporate your heart motif into your makeup. An easy way to do this is to use red lipstick to make a heart-shaped pout (a la Helena Bonham Carter’s Queen of Hearts).  You could also try drawing a heart on your cheek or drawing a large heart around one of your eyes.

How to Spot a Fake Diamond

fake diamond

When purchasing a diamond, make sure you’re buying from a reputable source. Some diamonds come with a GIA or EGL USA certification, which ensure they are real, but most don’t. If you’re worried that a diamond you purchased may be fake, there are many ways you can check its authenticity. Let’s take a look at some of the options for spotting a fake diamond.

Look for Flaws Under a Magnifying Glass

One way to spot a fake diamond at home is to look at it under a magnifying glass. Get a magnifying glass (of ten times magnification or higher) and compare your suspected fake to a diamond you know is real. In this test, finding flaws (internal and external) is actually a good sign that your diamond is likely to be real.

Real diamonds are formed over many years in the earth’s crust. This natural formation leads to some flaws on the diamond, flaws that will look like tiny scratches under magnification. Many fakes, on the other hand, have no flaws at all, as they were made in a lab.

One thing to note about this, however, is that some real diamonds may have no flaws if they are internally and externally flawless. This type of natural diamond is incredibly rare (and tends to be incredibly expensive) but it is possible that your diamond may be flawless rather than fake. If you’re unsure after doing the magnification test, you can always take your diamond into a jeweler for a second opinion.

Test the Density of a Fake Diamond

Here’s a simple way to spot a fake diamond: place the loose stone in a glass of water and watch how it sinks. Real diamonds are very dense and will sink to the bottom of the glass. Many fakes will not and will either fall slowly or float. This test works best on smaller stones, as larger fakes may have enough weight to sink quickly, even though they may not be as dense as a real diamond.

See if You Can Read Through Your Diamond

For this test, get a newspaper, book, or magazine and put your gemstone up to the words. If your diamond is real, it’s very unlikely that you’ll be able to see through it, as a diamond with even a decent cut will scramble up the text through light reflection and refraction. Some fakes, on the other hand, will allow you to see through to the page. This is particularly true for fakes made from glass and cubic zirconium.

Note: this test works best on round or other brilliant cut gemstones. It may not be the best test for step cut stones, which reflect light in a different way and are easier to see through, whether they are diamonds or not.

Check for Fogginess

A simple way to check a diamond for authenticity is to is head to a cool or cold location and breathe on the gemstone. Because of their chemical composition, real diamonds don’t hold heat well, which means they won’t fog up from your breath. However, other stones, including moissanite, will fog up quite easily.

Debunking an Old Wives’ Tale: The Glass Scratch Test

For our last tip, we wanted to point out a commonly recommended test that doesn’t work. You may see some people talking about doing a “glass test” to determine a diamond’s authenticity. This test involves running your suspected fake against a piece of glass and seeing whether or not it scratches the glass. While a real diamond will certainly be able to scratch glass, so will many other types of gemstones, including cubic zirconia, quartz, moissanite, and lab made diamonds. So, this test is not one we’d recommend, as many commonly used fake diamond materials will also pass.

Gifts That “Naturally Rock”

White Gold Martini Set Round Diamond Studs

Diamonds are one of nature’s most beautiful creations. Each of the world’s diamonds spent more than a billion years forming under very specific conditions deep within the earth. The result of these serendipitous circumstances is nature’s most beautiful mineral, the diamond. To celebrate this dazzling gemstone, we’ve put together this list of some of our current favorite diamond pieces. Browse below see our list of gifts that “naturally rock” and find the perfect gift for the special someone in your life (or, of course, the perfect gift for yourself).

These dazzling white diamond studs (which are also featured in the photo at the top of this page) have a classic elegance. Here, two shimmering white diamonds are set in a martini setting. The martini setting gets its name from its triangular shape that’s reminiscent of a martini glass. This three-pronged setting gives these particular diamond studs an elegant touch that we can’t get enough of.

White Gold Emerald Cut Diamond Studs

The emerald cut is different from many other diamond shapes in that it’s step cut. With a step cut, large rectangular cuts are used to shape the diamond, which gives it a more dramatic flash factor. This gorgeous cut also allows the natural beauty of the clarity of a white diamond to take center stage. The purity of the emerald cut shines through brilliantly in this featured set of emerald cut diamond studs. Each diamond in this set has a radiant, “ice-like” quality that we adore.

White Gold Cushion Cut Diamond Studs

The cushion cut diamond has a classic appeal. This traditional cut, which used to be called the old mine cut, creates a gorgeous pattern of light from within a diamond. Cushion cut diamonds often have the best fire of any diamond shape, which helps add an air of magic to their beauty.

This featured pair of cushion cut diamonds is elegant and unique. While cushion cuts were the most popular diamond cut in many antique and vintage eras, today they are less commonly seen. This gives this pair of diamond studs a more distinctive look that sets it apart from other studs. In this set, the cushion cut studs are cradled in a beautiful white gold four prong setting that allows for maximum light entrance to ensure the natural beauty of the diamonds shines through.

Guidelines for Choosing Quality Diamond Studs

Diamond studs are an incredibly versatile jewelry staple. They pair perfectly with almost every outfit— plus, their design can be customized to suit your exact tastes. You can choose your ideal metal, setting, diamond shape, and diamond quality for your studs. But when there are so many variables when shopping for diamond studs, how can you be sure you’re buying the pair that’s right for you? Read on to see our guidelines for selecting quality diamond studs!

1. Mind the 4Cs

The four Cs are important to consider when buying any diamond, and the diamonds in your diamond studs are no exception. If you don’t already know, the four Cs are four different qualities that define a diamond: diamond carat, diamond cut, diamond clarity, and diamond color.

Carat, perhaps the most well known of the four Cs, is a measurement of how much a diamond weighs (and is also a reasonably good indicator of size). Cut is a measurement of how well a diamond was cut, clarity is how clear (meaning free of inclusions and blemishes) a diamond is, and color defines how white a diamond is.

When considering how well diamonds in a pair of diamond studs stack up according to the four Cs, it’s important to know how important each quality is to you. Do you want the whitest diamond you can get? Or do you want the largest diamond you can get? You can choose which aspects of your diamonds are the most important to you, then shop with that in mind.

2.  Only Buy Certified Diamonds

This step is extremely important when shopping for diamond studs: you should only buy diamonds that are GIA or AGSL certified. If the diamonds you buy aren’t certified, there’s no way of ensuring you know the quality you’re buying. To avoid overpaying for subpar diamonds, it’s best to never buy uncertified diamonds.

3.  Consider A Pop of Color

While white diamonds are certainly the most classic choice for a pair of diamond studs, diamonds come in many different color options. If you are shopping for someone who loves to wear color (or if you’re shopping for yourself and you love color), consider choosing blue or yellow diamonds for your studs. You can also choose different neutral colors for your diamonds; brown and black diamonds are sophisticated alternatives to white diamonds.

4.  Choose Your Metal

Selecting the right metal for your diamond studs is important both stylistically and practically. On the practical side of things, you should remember that gold is softer than platinum, and is more likely to get scuffed. And the higher the karat of gold, the softer it is. So if you’re shopping for someone who’s very active (or maybe someone who just doesn’t want to be super careful with their jewelry), platinum or a lower karat gold might be a better choice for them.

Style-wise, certain people simply prefer certain metal colors over others. If you’re shopping for yourself, you likely know which metal colors appeal to you most. But if you’re shopping for someone else, make sure to consider which color of jewelry they might like best.

5.  Pick A Setting You’ll Love

Diamond studs can be set in a few different ways. They can be prong set, which allows the side of the diamond to be seen. Or they can be bezel set, which shows very little of a diamond’s sides but has the advantage of being exceptionally secure. You can also choose to get a halo setting, which adds major sparkle to a pair of studs. Think about which setting appeals to you most (or would appeal to whoever you’re shopping for) before you buy.

6.  Keep It Secure

The last step to choosing your perfect diamond studs? Make sure you pick the right backing style for you. Earring backings are what keep diamond studs securely in place on your ear, and there are a few different kinds. Push backs are the standard earring backing, screw backs are a more secure backing that screws into place, and secure lock backs are the most secure backing that locks into place. Consider which backing would best suit you (or the lucky person you’re shopping for), then choose the backing that you think would work best.

Those are our six guidelines for buying quality diamond studs! Ready to buy your perfect pair? Check out our diamond stud builder to design your ideal diamond studs.

Why Diamond Jewelry is a Good Investment

Diamond jewelry is beautiful, special, and something that will last a lifetime— but it’s also a good investment. Diamond jewelry, like many other physical commodities, tends to increase in price over time, regardless the state of the economy. That’s because, while the diamonds themselves are valuable, so are the precious metals used in fine jewelry. And if a piece of diamond jewelry is especially well-crafted or exceptionally beautifully designed, that can also increase the value of the piece over time.

Are you thinking of investing in diamond jewelry? Or wondering if some diamond jewelry is a better investment than the rest? Let’s take a look at the best diamond jewelry to invest in.

The Best Diamond Jewelry To Invest In

When it comes to investing in diamond jewelry, it’s important to consider what holds value best in the market, as well as what will be the easiest to sell.

So, first let’s consider what kind of jewelry holds its value exceptionally well. When it comes to the value of diamond jewelry, the value of the jewelry is all about the market perception. And what’s the one thing the jewelry market cares most about? Rarity.

More rare diamonds are considered more desirable, across the board. And the type of diamonds that are the rarest? Colored diamonds and exceptionally high-quality white diamonds. Naturally colored diamonds are incredibly rare, with red and blue diamonds being the rarest. But pink, orange, green, and yellow diamonds are also quite rare and are, therefore, highly desired.

When you’re considering the investment quality of diamond jewelry, you should also consider the metal it’s set in. Gold (white or yellow) and platinum are both excellent investments that tend to hold value well. So, as long as your diamond jewelry is made with these precious metals, this will add to the overall value of your jewelry.

Now we move onto the next part of the investment equation: how easy your jewelry will be to sell. We’ve already covered that rare diamonds hold their value well, but it’s important to also consider what the market wants. Consider buying rare diamonds with highly desired cuts, like round or cushion cut diamonds, rather than unusual, less popular cuts like the marquise. Make sure to get a good feel for what the market consistently likes when considering whether or not a piece of jewelry is the best investment.

One last note on buying jewelry: always, always make sure the jewelry you buy is certified. Don’t take a seller’s word for it that a diamond has a certain carat or color— only buy diamond jewelry that comes with GIA certification so you know the exact value of what you’re buying.

Diamond Jewelry Investment and Diversifying

As with any kind of investment, it’s important to diversify your diamond jewelry investments. Consider collecting different kinds of diamond jewelry (like both blue diamond jewelry and yellow diamond jewelry, for example) to protect yourself from market fluctuations.

Investing in diamond jewelry itself is also a good way to diversify your overall investment portfolio. Acquiring physical investments like diamonds and precious metals is a good way to protect yourself from the fluctuations in other investments you may have, like stocks. When your investment portfolio is diverse, you can hedge your bets against the unstable market and set yourself up for a higher rate of success.
